Rabbit Hay Guide: Timothy vs Orchard vs Meadow
Hay is 70-80% of a rabbit's diet -- and not all hay is equal. Picking the right type for your rabbit's age and digestion saves vet visits and surprise GI stasis.
Timothy hay (the default)
The standard for adult rabbits. Long-stem, high-fibre, low-protein. Coarse texture wears down constantly-growing teeth.
Orchard grass
Softer, sweeter. Good for rabbits who reject timothy. Comparable fibre, slightly higher in some seasons.
Meadow hay
Mixed grasses, varied texture, often more aromatic. Many rabbits prefer it. Quality varies by supplier.
Alfalfa (kittens and seniors only)
Legume hay -- higher calcium and protein. Suitable for rabbits under 6 months or underweight seniors. Not recommended for healthy adults.
Storage and freshness
Hay loses nutritional value within 6-8 weeks of opening. Buy in smaller quantities. Store in a dry, ventilated container.
