An outdoor kennel needs shade, a wind break, and a raised or insulated floor. Bare ground pulls heat out of a dog fast in a Canadian winter, and direct summer sun turns an unshaded run into a hazard. A kennel is a daytime containment area, not a place to leave a dog overnight in extreme temperatures.
Check the coating on any metal kennel. Powder-coated or galvanised steel handles freeze-thaw cycles and road salt spray; untreated steel will rust within a season or two in most of Canada.
Floor area matters more than height for most breeds. Give your dog enough room to walk several paces, turn, and lie fully stretched, plus a separate area for water that will not get knocked over.
Not unsupervised in Canadian winter temperatures. Below roughly -10 C most breeds need indoor shelter. A kennel is for supervised daytime containment, not overnight housing in the cold.
Yes, if it is used outdoors. A roof provides shade in summer and keeps rain and snow off. It also stops athletic dogs from climbing out.
As a minimum, enough space for your dog to walk several paces and lie fully stretched. Bigger is genuinely better for outdoor kennels - unlike crates, there is no house-training downside.
