Guinea Pig Bonding: How to Help Two Pigs Get Along
Guinea pigs are social and lonely alone -- but throwing two together unprepared causes injury. The slow neutral-territory method gets pairs bonded in 1-2 weeks.
The basics
Best pair: two females, or two neutered males. Same age within 6 months. Always provide enough space (minimum 1.0 m^2 floor space for two).
Step 1: Neutral territory
Use a space neither pig has been in. A clean bathtub with a towel works for many people.
Step 2: Initial introduction
Both pigs together, supervised. Expect chattering, rumblestrutting, occasional nips. Don't intervene unless blood is drawn.
Step 3: Watch the body language
Normal: chattering teeth, mounting, chasing.
Worry: lunging with teeth bared, sustained chasing without breaks, fighting that draws blood.
Step 4: Shared cage
After 1-2 hours of stable behaviour, move them to a deep-cleaned cage with two of every resource (water bottles, hideouts, food bowls).
