What a good chicken coop needs

Space is the first thing to get right. The general standard is about 0.3 to 0.4 square metres of coop floor per standard hen, plus roughly 1 square metre each in the attached run. Crowded birds feather-pick and fall ill more readily, so err generous.

Ventilation without draught is the second. Coops need airflow high up to carry off ammonia and moisture, but no cold air blowing directly across roosting birds. In Canadian winters, moisture rather than cold is what causes frostbitten combs - a damp coop is far more dangerous than a cold dry one.

Then check predator-proofing. Raccoons open simple latches, and rodents and weasels exploit small gaps. Look for two-step latches, hardware cloth rather than flimsy chicken wire on openings, and a floor or apron that stops digging.

Frequently asked questions

How many chickens fit in this coop?

Work from the floor area in the specifications below at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 square metres per standard hen inside, plus run space. Manufacturer bird counts are usually optimistic.

Can a coop stay outside through a Canadian winter?

Yes, if it is dry, draught-free at roost height, and ventilated up high. Hens tolerate cold well; damp is the real hazard. Many keepers add a deep litter layer over winter.

Is it predator proof?

Check the latch type and mesh gauge in the specifications. Raccoons defeat single-action latches, so add a carabiner or barrel bolt. An apron of hardware cloth around the base deters digging.

Does it need assembly?

Almost all coops ship flat-packed with hardware and instructions. Expect a couple of hours and, for larger models, a second pair of hands.

How long does delivery take, and will I pay customs?
