The Ultimate Canadian Pet Travel Checklist (2026 Edition)

Written by Pet Care Store * Ships from Canada * CAD pricing * 30-day satisfaction guarantee

Trans-Canada road trip with a Golden Retriever in the back. Air Canada flight to visit your in-laws with a cat in cabin. Two weeks at the cottage with a rabbit. They all start with the same packing list -- and a few documents you don't want to discover you need at the border.

Documents you need before you leave

  • Up-to-date rabies vaccine -- required for crossing into the US and most international destinations. Carry the certificate.
  • Microchip -- ISO-compliant 15-digit chip is the global standard.
  • Domestic flights: a recent vet health certificate dated within 10 days is requested by some airlines.
  • International flights: check the CFIA pet export portal 60 days before travel -- some destinations need pre-arrival testing.

Cabin-flying with a pet in Canada

Both Air Canada and WestJet allow small cats and dogs in the cabin if total pet+carrier weight is under ~10 kg (rules vary slightly by route). Your carrier must fit under the seat in front of you.

  • Book the pet space at the time of ticket purchase -- limited per flight.
  • Use a soft-sided carrier with mesh ventilation panels, like the Conlun Airline-Approved Carrier.
  • Practise carrier time at home for 2 weeks before travel.

Road-trip kit (the actual must-haves)

  1. Collapsible water bowl -- our collapsible silicone bowls fold flat into a glove box.
  2. Stainless travel water bottle -- the LumoLeaf 800 ml dispenses water directly into a leaf-shaped bowl.
  3. Foldable mat or blanket -- the surface goes everywhere with you.
  4. Travel leash + ID tag with cell number.
  5. Pet first-aid kit: gauze, vet wrap, saline, tweezers, your vet's number.
  6. Carrier or seat belt harness -- a loose dog in a car is dangerous in a collision. The Transport Canada guidance on cargo restraint extends to pets.

Pack everything into one carry pouch like the Pet Travel Gear Pack.

Pet-friendly stops across Canada

Trans-Canada Highway: Tim Hortons drive-throughs are dog-friendly at the window; most provincial rest areas have grass leash zones. Cottage country and most National Parks (Banff, Jasper, Algonquin, Cape Breton, Gros Morne, Pacific Rim) welcome leashed pets on most trails but not all -- always check the Parks Canada pet pages for your specific park.

Cooling and heating for Canadian extremes

Summer: pet cooling mats and shade are non-negotiable above 25 C. See our cooling mat collection.

Winter: waterproof dog boots protect paws from salt and ice on parking-lot walks and longer hikes.

Never leave a pet in a parked car -- summer or winter. The Canadian SPCA reports that interior temperatures can climb 15 C in 10 minutes.

Emergency phone numbers to save

  • Your vet's after-hours line
  • Pet Poison Helpline Canada: 1-855-764-7661
  • Closest 24-hour emergency vet at your destination
  • A friend or family member who can pick up if you can't

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Air Canada let cats fly in the cabin?

Yes -- small cats and dogs that fit in an under-seat carrier are allowed on most domestic routes when booked at time of ticket purchase. Confirm dimensions and weight with Air Canada before flying.

Do I need a vet certificate for a domestic flight?

It depends on the airline and route. Some airlines request a health certificate dated within 10 days. Check at booking.

Can I take my dog into US National Parks?

Yes, but most US parks restrict dogs to roads and campgrounds, not backcountry trails. Canadian Parks generally allow leashed dogs more broadly -- check the specific park.

What size carrier fits under an airline seat?

Around 17 x 11 x 11 inches is the typical maximum. The Conlun soft-sided carrier is sized for this footprint.

Where can I buy the travel kit in Canada?

Right here at Pet Care Store -- tracked Canadian shipping, CAD pricing, no surprise duties.
