Size the carrier so your pet can stand without ducking, turn around fully, and lie down naturally. Bigger is not automatically better - in a vehicle, a carrier with excess room lets a pet get thrown about, so a snug but adequate fit is safer.
Ventilation on at least three sides matters more than most buyers realise, especially for flat-faced breeds that overheat quickly. Mesh panels on multiple faces keep airflow moving and let an anxious animal see out, which reduces stress.
If you plan to fly, confirm the carrier meets your airline's under-seat dimensions before buying. Air Canada and WestJet publish specific maximums and they differ, so check the route you actually fly rather than assuming a carrier labelled airline approved will pass.
Your pet should stand without their head touching the roof, turn around completely, and lie flat. Measure length nose to tail base and height floor to top of head while standing.
Check the dimensions below against your specific airline's under-seat limits. Air Canada and WestJet publish different maximums, and requirements vary by aircraft.
Leave it open in a room your cat already uses, with a familiar blanket inside, for a week or two before travel. Feed treats in it. A carrier that only appears on vet days becomes something to hide from.
Yes, and it is far safer than a loose pet. Secure it with a seatbelt through the strap channels if the carrier provides them.
