Choosing a pet gate that actually holds

Pressure-mounted gates are fine for doorways and flat hallways, but never for the top of stairs. A determined dog leaning on a pressure gate can walk it out of the frame. For stairs, use a hardware-mounted gate that screws into the wall studs.

Measure the opening at the exact height the gate will sit, not at the floor. Door frames and hallway walls are rarely perfectly parallel, and a 2 cm difference is enough to leave a gap your dog will exploit.

Gate height should be at least 1.5 times your dog's shoulder height for jumpers. For small breeds and puppies, a 60-75 cm gate is usually enough; for larger or athletic dogs, look for 90 cm or taller.
