Getting scratching posts right

Height is why most scratching posts fail. Cats scratch to stretch the full length of their body, and a post shorter than your cat's full standing reach does not deliver that stretch. For an average adult cat, look for at least 60-80 cm of scratchable height on a vertical post.

Stability is the second failure point. If a post rocks when a cat leans into it, they will go back to the sofa arm, which does not move. A wide, heavy base is worth more than extra features.

Placement should follow your cat's existing behaviour rather than your decor preference. Put the post next to whatever they are currently scratching, and next to where they sleep - most cats scratch within a minute of waking.
