How to Introduce a New Cat to Your Resident Cat (Step by Step)

Sudden cat introductions are the #1 cause of long-term inter-cat aggression in Canadian homes. Done right, a slow 7-day plan turns most pairs into co-existing -- and sometimes affectionate -- housemates.

Why rushing fails

Cats are territorial. A face-to-face meeting on day one floods both cats with stress hormones, which sets a hostile baseline that can last months. The slow plan lets each cat build a positive association with the other's scent before they even see each other.

Day 1-2: Scent exchange

Set up the new cat in a separate room with food, water, a litter box, and a cozy hideaway like a wool cave bed. Swap a sock or blanket between the two cats every 12 hours. No visual contact yet.

Day 3-4: Feed across the door

Place food bowls on opposite sides of the door, then move them closer over each meal. The cats now associate the other cat's scent with food -- a positive emotional anchor.

Day 5: Visual introduction

Use a baby gate or cracked door. Brief visual sessions of 5-10 minutes, end on a good note (treats, play). No free roaming yet.

Day 6-7: Supervised free interaction

Open the door for short, supervised sessions. Provide vertical escape routes (a cat tree like Gitelsnour works perfectly), separate cat beds and at least one litter box per cat plus one extra.

Red flags

Watch for: prolonged staring with rigid body, low growling, urinating outside the box, redirected aggression. If any persist, slow down and add 2-3 more days to the previous step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full introduction take?

7 days minimum for adult cat-cat introductions. Kittens often integrate faster (3-5 days).

Should I use Feliway or pheromone diffusers?

Many vets recommend them as a low-risk add-on -- not a replacement for the slow plan.

What if there is hissing on day 5?

Normal. Slow down by a day. Persistent hissing past day 10 calls for a vet behaviour referral.

Can I do this for a kitten + adult cat?

Yes. Kittens often need less time, but the adult sets the pace.

Ships cat supplies across Canada?

Yes -- tracked CA shipping in CAD.
