How to Read a Dog Food Label (The 3-Minute Version)

by Pet Care Store Canada Team 01 Jul 2026
Written by Pet Care Store Canada Team * Ships from Canada * CAD pricing * 30-day satisfaction guarantee

Dog food labels are designed to sell, not inform. Three minutes of focused reading reveals the real story.

1. The first 5 ingredients

Listed by weight before cooking. Look for whole proteins (chicken, salmon, lamb) and named meals (chicken meal). Skip 'meat by-products' and unspecified animal sources.

2. AAFCO statement

Look for 'formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles' or 'animal feeding tests' for the life stage. This is the floor.

3. Guaranteed analysis

Crude protein, fat, fibre, moisture. Compare brands at the same moisture content (or convert to dry matter).

4. Life stage

Adult, puppy, senior, all life stages. Match to your dog.

5. The marketing words to ignore

'Premium', 'gourmet', 'natural', 'human-grade' are not regulated. Real signals are in the ingredient list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 'grain-free' better?

Not necessarily. FDA flagged a possible link between grain-free and DCM in some breeds.

How important is named protein first?

Very. 'Chicken' beats 'meat by-product' in transparency and quality.

What is 'meal' in 'chicken meal'?

Dehydrated chicken -- a concentrated protein source. Not bad.

Is by-product always bad?

Not always -- organ meat is nutrient-dense. But 'unspecified meat by-products' tells you nothing about the source.

Ships dog food across Canada?

Yes -- CAD, tracked CA shipping.
