Dog Crate Training: A 7-Day Plan
Done well, a crate is a den. Done badly, it's a punishment. The difference is in the first 7 days.
Day 1: Make it inviting
Open door, soft bedding (a washable EMPSIGN reversible crate pad works perfectly), a few treats inside. No closing the door yet.
Day 2: Treats inside, door open
Toss high-value treats one at a time. Let the dog walk in and out freely.
Day 3: Feed meals inside
Place the food bowl just inside. Then halfway. Then at the back. Door still open.
Day 4: Close the door for 30 seconds
While dog is eating. Reopen before they finish. Build up to 2 minutes.
Day 5: Up to 10 minutes
Door closed while you're in the room. Use a long-lasting chew (frozen stuffed Kong).
Day 6: You leave the room
Briefly, 1-5 minutes. Return calmly, don't make a fuss.
Day 7: 20-30 minutes solo
Test with a calming pre-crate routine: walk, water, treat, crate.

Should I cover the crate?

Won't my dog hate the crate?
Not if you build the association slowly. Most dogs choose the crate on their own by week 2.
