A catio gives an indoor cat safe access to fresh air, sunlight, and stimulation without the risks of free roaming. Outdoor cats in Canada face traffic, coyotes, other cats, and winter exposure; indoor cats live substantially longer but often show boredom-driven behaviour. An enclosure is the compromise that solves both.
Look for a secure roof and a latching door. Cats climb, and an open-topped enclosure is a launch pad rather than a containment system. Check that mesh gauge is fine enough that a paw cannot get through and small enough to keep wildlife out.
Placement matters: partial shade, sheltered from prevailing wind, and within sight of a window your cat already uses. Most cats will use a catio far more if they can see their indoor territory from inside it.
Most cats investigate within a few days and many become daily users. Put a familiar blanket or bed inside and place it where your cat already likes to sit in the sun.
