Dog stairs are preventive equipment as much as accessibility equipment. Every jump down from a bed or sofa sends impact through the shoulders and elbows, and for long-backed breeds like Dachshunds and Corgis, repeated jumping is a genuine risk factor for spinal injury.
Match the step height to your dog's leg length. Steps that are too tall are just a smaller jump; the rise per step should be low enough that your dog can step up without hopping. For senior or arthritic dogs, a ramp is often easier than stairs.
Stability is the thing that determines whether your dog uses them. A set that shifts underfoot will be abandoned after one bad experience. Look for a non-slip base and a non-slip tread surface, particularly on hardwood or tile.
Lure with treats one step at a time over a few short sessions. Never lift them onto the stairs. Most dogs are using them confidently within a week.
Stairs suit dogs with reasonable mobility. Ramps are better for seniors, arthritic dogs, and very short-legged breeds that struggle to lift their body weight step by step.
