Bar spacing is a safety specification, not a preference. Too wide and a small bird gets their head through and panics or injures itself; too narrow and larger parrots cannot grip to climb. Match the spacing in the specifications below to your species before anything else.
Width matters more than height for most companion birds. Budgies, cockatiels, and finches fly horizontally, so a wide cage gives far more usable space than a tall narrow one of the same volume. Height is only useful when it comes with width.
Placement changes behaviour markedly. Birds settle better against a wall rather than floating in the middle of a room, at roughly chest height, away from kitchen fumes - non-stick cookware fumes are rapidly fatal to birds - and out of direct draughts.

As a floor, your bird should be able to fully extend both wings in every direction and make several wing beats between perches. Wider beats taller for most species.

Change liners daily, wash perches and dishes weekly, and do a full cage clean monthly.
