Starting agility at home

Backyard agility is excellent enrichment. A dog working a short course is problem-solving, building body awareness, and burning mental energy in a way that a longer walk does not. For high-drive breeds that are difficult to tire out, twenty minutes of agility often does more than an hour of fetch.

Start every obstacle low. Jump bars should begin on the ground, and heights should build gradually over weeks. Growing dogs should not jump at full height until their growth plates close - roughly 12-18 months depending on breed size. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

Surface matters. Set equipment up on grass rather than concrete or patio stone, and avoid repetitive jumping on hard surfaces entirely. Warm your dog up with a few minutes of walking and trotting before starting a session.
