Height is the single biggest factor. Cats use vertical space to manage stress, and a tree under 1.2 m gives them very little real territory. For a single adult cat, 1.5-1.8 m is the sweet spot. Leave 30-40 cm of ceiling clearance so your cat is not bumping their head landing on the top platform.
Base width matters more than most buyers realise. As a rule the base should be at least one third of the tree's height. A narrow base wobbles when a cat leaps to the top, and a wobbling tree is a tree your cat will stop using. If your tree includes a wall anchor strap, use it - it takes five minutes and eliminates tipping entirely.
Look for sisal rope on the scratching posts rather than carpet. Carpet-wrapped posts teach cats that carpet is an acceptable scratching surface, which is the opposite of what you want in a Canadian apartment with wall-to-wall broadloom.
Minimum 1.2 m for adult cats; 1.5-1.8 m is ideal. Cats want elevation, so taller is generally better - just leave 30-40 cm of ceiling clearance.
About 85% of cats use a cat tree within a week if it is placed near a window and away from foot traffic. Sprinkle a little catnip on the platforms and hide treats on each level for the first few days.
For any tree over 1.2 m, yes. Most quality trees include an anchor strap that screws into a wall stud. It prevents tipping when a heavier cat jumps off the top.
Always sisal. Carpet-wrapped posts blur the line between the tree and your actual carpet, which is how furniture gets shredded.
