Floor space beats height for hamsters. Syrian hamsters need a minimum of roughly 4000 square centimetres of unbroken floor area - considerably more than most pet-store cages provide. Multi-level cages look generous but the tubes and platforms do not count toward usable floor area.
Bar spacing is a safety issue. Dwarf hamsters and young mice can squeeze through gaps over about 8 mm. Check the bar spacing in the specs below against the species you are keeping.
Deep bedding is what makes a cage work. Hamsters burrow, and 15-20 cm of substrate transforms their behaviour and reduces the bar-chewing and repetitive pacing you see in shallow setups. Choose a cage with a deep base tray so bedding stays in.
For a Syrian hamster, aim for at least 4000 sq cm of unbroken floor space. Dwarf species need slightly less but benefit from the same generous footprint.
Under 8 mm for dwarf hamsters and mice; up to 10 mm is usually safe for Syrians. Check the specs below.
Syrian hamsters must be housed alone - they will fight, sometimes fatally. Some dwarf species can cohabit if introduced young and given ample space.
