Height is why most scratching posts fail. Cats scratch to stretch the full length of their body, and a post shorter than your cat's full standing reach does not deliver that stretch. For an average adult cat, look for at least 60-80 cm of scratchable height on a vertical post.
Stability is the second failure point. If a post rocks when a cat leans into it, they will go back to the sofa arm, which does not move. A wide, heavy base is worth more than extra features.
Placement should follow your cat's existing behaviour rather than your decor preference. Put the post next to whatever they are currently scratching, and next to where they sleep - most cats scratch within a minute of waking.
Tall enough that your cat can stretch to full height while scratching - usually at least 60-80 cm of scratchable surface for an adult cat.
Move the post directly beside the sofa spot they are using, and make sure it does not wobble. Once they switch, move it a few centimetres per week to a location you prefer.
Cats have individual preferences. If your cat scratches carpet and rugs, they likely prefer horizontal; if they target sofa arms and door frames, vertical.
Typically every 1-3 years depending on use. Some posts have replaceable sisal sleeves; check the specs below.
