Cat steps solve two different problems. For kittens and small breeds, they bridge a gap that is simply too big. For senior and arthritic cats, they remove the jump that has started to hurt - and cats hide pain well, so a cat that has quietly stopped getting on the bed is often the first sign of joint trouble.
Rise per step should be low. If your cat still has to hop between steps, the steps are too tall to be doing their job. For arthritic cats, a ramp with a gentle gradient is usually easier than a staircase.
Surface grip matters more for cats than for dogs. A carpeted or textured tread gives claws something to catch; a smooth painted surface will be abandoned after the first slip.
Place a treat on each step and let them work up at their own pace. Never lift them onto the steps. Most cats are confident within a few days.
Ramps are generally easier for arthritic cats since there is no lifting between levels. Steps work well for cats with reasonable mobility.
Look for a carpeted or textured tread. On hardwood, add a rubber-backed mat under the base for extra stability.
Check the placement. Steps need to be flush against the furniture your cat is trying to reach, with no gap to jump.
