Cats seek enclosed spaces because an enclosed space is defensible. A house with a single entrance, a roof, and walls on all sides gives a cat something an open bed cannot - a spot where they can rest without monitoring the room behind them.
For multi-cat homes, houses reduce conflict. A subordinate cat with a private retreat is far less likely to be cornered, and the reduction in forced interaction shows up quickly as less hissing and fewer scuffles.
If the house is going outdoors, check for a waterproof roof, a raised floor to keep it off wet ground, and an entrance sheltered from prevailing wind. Feral and outdoor cat shelters in Canada also benefit from a small entrance that retains body heat.
Most do, particularly shy cats and cats in multi-pet homes. Place it somewhere your cat already rests and add a familiar blanket.
Only if the materials are weather rated - check the specs below. Outdoor cat houses need a waterproof roof and a raised floor.
In a multi-cat home, follow the one-per-cat-plus-one rule for resting spots, spread across different rooms rather than clustered together.
Most designs have a removable roof or a wide entrance for access. Check the features list below.
